The Snopes family being post- Civil War farmers are instead rewritten as Javanese immigrants who had just moved into a new rubber plantation.

When they get home that evening Abner tells Sarty to go get the oil that they were using earlier in the day to oil the wagon. As soon as Snopes leaves, that is exactly what Sarty does. Faulkner emphasizes his theme of justice by having Sarty compare the de Spain mansion to a place of law: The next day the Snopeses arrive at their new home, a shack on the farm where they will be working as tenant farmers.

He tries to dissuade Snopes, but Snopes grabs Sartoris by the collar and orders his wife to restrain him. This is in direct conflict with his last name. After Sarty falls asleep, his father wakes him up and tells Sarty to follow him.

And at the crucial moment as he knows he has a chance, he chooses honor and doing right over sticking to blood. Snopes supervises as the two sisters reluctantly clean the carpet with lye, and he uses a jagged stone to work the surface of the expensive rug. Snopes burned his barn.

He then runs out of the house as he hears the Major yelling for someone to get his horse. But Abner indicates that the Major will never get the corn from him. In lieu of the hundred-dollar replacement fee, the major says Snopes will be charged twenty additional bushels of corn.

Harris an ominous warning that wood and hay are combustible. Early the next morning, Sarty is awakened by his father, who tells him to saddle the mule.

As the family is camping that night, after supper, Abner comes up to him and asks Sarty if he was going to tell the court the truth about the barn burning. Abner sends him back to the wagon, but he stays in the store to see what happens. He's come a long way.

Faulkner's Short Stories

His motivations for deliberately soiling and then ruining the rug are essentially related to his wounded foot and his wounded pride. Along with Sarty, we do not know what trespasses between the two men, but it is soon apparent that de Spain has brought the rug for Snopes to clean. Everything is behind him.

Sartoris attempts to defend Snopes, saying that he never burned the barn, but Snopes orders him back to the wagon.

For he is a Snopessharecropper and barn burner. Faulkner comments that Sarty is unaware that his father went to war not out of a sense of loyalty, but for "booty — it meant nothing and less than nothing to him if it were enemy booty or his own. As Sarty is up there and feeling uncomfortable, the court has mercy on him and decides to not question him any further.

However, in the South at the time the story takes place, a black person could not deny admittance to a Southern white person.

Two hours later, the servant drops off the rug that Snopes had soiled and instructs him to clean and return it. Snopes to leave the country and never come back.
